The school is enriched by the cultural diversity of our community and we encourage students and families to value and appreciate the multicultural aspects of our school community.
We have many support groups and committees which are actively supported by parents and members of the community including; P&C, School Swimming Club, School Advisory Committee, Pre-School Parent Group, Prep Network, AASPA, Cultural Groups and fundraising committees. Parents organise and run the school's breakfast program in partnership with staff and students.
As a partner in the 'Linking to Learn' project with Griffith University and Mission Australia the school provides a valuable outreach service to parents of Year 1 students. Often the service is in the first language of our parents.
Commonwealth funding under the Literacy Enhancement Scheme recognises a significant need in this community to focus on improving literacy levels.
The Indigenous Education Strategy Initiatives Program (IESIP) provides Commonwealth funding to support our indigenous students' education, particularly to enhance their literacy and numeracy outcomes. A number of parents have been trained to support school reading and mathematics programs. We are a 'Partners for Success' trial school and launched our 'Partners for Success' action plan in May 2004. Through our active ASSPA committee, NAIDOC Games Week, links with indigenous community groups and wonderful dance troupes, we aim to continue to forge strong links with our indigenous commnunity.
In general our parents and community want their children to be happy and achieve success at school. They appreciate and support the implementation of a strong behaviour mangement program which incorporates an effective 'Points System.' Parent participation in school decision making involves a dedicated active and professional team of people who are members of the School Advisory Committee and/or the P&C. Our P&C is very well attended and supportive of the school. We are committed to promoting greater parent and community involvement and to addressing barriers faced by parents with non-English speaking backgrounds. According to the school opinion survey parents were satisified to very satisfied in all areas.
